key tips for building a stylish outdoor capsule wardrobe 🏕️ how building a capsule wardrobe saves you time, money and the planet

I'll be honest. It wasn't that long ago where if you asked me what a 'capsule wardrobe' was, I'd look back at you with a raised eyebrow (lol)

I'd heard of it, thought it sounded cool, annnnnnd.... kept scrollin'

then I read about how creating a capsule wardrobe for your outdoor adventures can help keep your life less complicated while keeping you ready for anything so this article is as much for me as it is for you ;)

what even is a capsule wardrobe?

fewer pieces. more intention. endless outfits.

somewhere along the way "capsule wardrobe" became code for beige and boring. it's the little black something you never wear, or the safe polo, loafers and khakis. but we're here to fix that.

the real goal? own less, wear more. every piece earns its place by working with at least three other things in your wardrobe. statistically we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time — so let's ditch the 80% and make that 20% work overtime.

more than just a curated collection of versatile pieces that work together in multiple combinations, take the time to choose items you truly love and gradually downsize to a wardrobe you both wear AND enjoy.

key tips for building a stylish outdoor capsule wardrobe

1. layer like you mean it with high-quality technical layers with every piece working individually or as part of a layering system:

    • starting with your merino wool base layer — moisture-wicking, quick-drying, barely needs washing.
    • add a solid fleece mid-layer for chilly mornings and campfire hangs
    • top it with a waterproof shell and a packable down jacket that can handle whatever the mountain throws at you. every piece should work solo or as part of a system.

2. focus on durable, functional pants

    • hiking pants: look for lightweight, quick-drying ripstop materials with multiple pockets (yes, real ones), such as durable hiking pants or convertible options.
    • leggings: choose high-waisted compression leggings with side pockets for comfort and protection that move with you
    • shorts: durable shorts for warm days and offer protection when sitting on the ground; pick two, mix freely

3. prioritize comfort in footwear & socks

    • boots: broken-in hiking boots that don't require a week of suffering to wear.
    • socks: invest in merino hiking socks with moderate cushioning that are taller than your boots. that's it. don't overthink it.
4. colour palette and style
    • neutrals: stick to black, navy, olive green or grey as your base colors for maximum versatility
    • accent colours: use earthy tones like deep red, rust or teal to add variety, which keeps the look stylish without being too flashy
5. essential accessories that earn their place a trucker hat or wide brim for sun. polarized sunglasses. a buff for everything else. a solid daypack. done.
    • sun protection: a wide-brim hat, functional sunglasses and a multifunctional buff are essential for protecting against UV rays (we love @puffdesigns and no they aren't paying us to say that!).
    • packing aids: use a high-quality daypack and packing cubes
6. less is more durability over trends, always. choose pieces that transition from trail to patio without a costume change. pick fabrics that handle multiple wears before washing — your future self will thank you.

example 10-piece hiking capsule:
    • 3 tops: sweat-wicking tank, merino long-sleeve, short-sleeve tech tee
    • 3 bottoms: hiking pants, leggings, shorts
    • 2 mid-layers: fleece pullover, active hoodie
    • 2 outerwear: rain jacket, packable puffer

how to make it work

the key is colour. a bold graphic hoodie + neutral basics = done. a colourful hat + simple tee = also done.

the statement piece does the heavy lifting; everything else supports it. pick pieces that share a palette – or deliberately contrast.

less laundry

owning less means washing less. fewer items, fewer loads, fewer decisions about what's clean. and, many quality items are made from materials that can handle more wears before being washed.

less money spent

that $40 you spent on 8 clearance tees that fell apart after one wash? gone. but staring at them in your drawer isn't saving you anything either.

next time, one quality tank at $35 gets you 50+ wears. do the math — it wins every time.

fewer pieces, better quality, less spent overall. not just because they last longer (and usually come with a solid return policy), but because when you invest a little more, you actually think it through — and end up with something you genuinely love and reach for again and again.

fewer decisions

decision fatigue is real — and today's life doesn't make it any easier.

from the moment you wake up to the moment you finally sit down, the decisions are relentless. throw in the constant scroll and it only gets louder.

so we like to make our lives easier by having only a few classic items to choose from, and mixing them up with a fun accessory - a few classic pieces, one fun accessory, infinite outfits. done. 🏔️✨

the funky capsule formula

start with your statement pieces – the ones that make you feel like yourself. then build the basics around them.

the statement piece is the anchor; the basics are the foundation. together they create a wardrobe that's both versatile and expressive.

the statement layer 🪩

a graphic hoodie or crop hoodie that works over everything and under anything. this is your personality piece — the one that sets the tone for the whole outfit. layer it over a tee, zip it over a long-sleeved or wear it solo.

the everyday tee 🖤

a baby tee or baseball tee that layers under the hoodie, tucks into jeans or stands alone on warm days. it's the quiet workhorse of the capsule — the piece that makes everything else click.

the finishing touch 🧢

a trucker hat that ties the whole thing together and works with every outfit in the collection.
