field note 002: how to get lost on purpose
Fina FunkShare

some people bring a laminated route. some bring seven snacks. some say 'i know a shortcut' and immediately become a liability
everyone's invited. but we're putting the snack person in charge of lunch
leave a little room
at some point, a day outside started needing deliverables. summit by 10. lunch with a view. photograph proving lunch had a view
somehow your saturday now has a line manager
this week, we're suggesting something radical: leave a little room. for the lakeside stop. the bakery on the way home. the excellent sitting rock where you briefly consider abandoning your responsibilities and start seriously considering how nice it would be to be moss
we've been doing it for years: following the interesting little sign and asking 'let's see what's down here'. once, in curaçao, that led us to a little alleyway bar covered in gold and red. a very good detour
the route can be planned. the day doesn't have to be scripted.
getting lost on purpose is a figure of speech, not a navigation strategy. bring your map, know your route, check the conditions, pack water and suitable layers and tell someone where you're going
take your detours on permitted paths, respect closures and keep your turnaround time. the spontaneity belongs in the afternoon, not in your safety arrangements
a deeply unserious investigation
find out which one you are before someone puts you in charge
who are you when the pavement ends? the route planner, the scenic-stop specialist or the person who packed lunch for a minor expedition? we made an outdoor personality test to investigate.
take it, send it to your adventure partner and compare results. if it starts a small debate in the group chat, our work here is done
welcome to the a-frame
a little mountain clubhouse for all of the above. big adventures, small adventures and adventures followed by a substantial pastry
our happy | camper collection belongs to that crowd: outdoor apparel with a personality, for the café afterwards and wherever the scenic route takes you. no audition required. because everyone deserves funky fashion
bring a plan. leave some room. protect the snacks
