what to wear to tame impala: outfit formulas that actually work
Fina FunkShare
if you don't know who tame impala is, then this might not be a big deal, but somehow funk + i got free tix to see tame impala in vancouver this weekend! so ofc i've been obsezed with figuring out what to wear (ahhh!!!)
[and if you do know tame impala, you know why ima obsezzing!] and not only that, but dominic fike's 3 nights is like my fav song at the mo!
with easy going, raw lyrics, curious melodies, very earthy tones, with a bit of electric and a whole lotta unique - tame impala is taking over spotify, and their concerts are becoming a bit of a fashion show
not an expert in 'all things' tame impala but looking through pinterest concert outfits, i'm seeing a blend retro psychedelic aesthetics, '70s indie-sleaze (think: boho macrame knits and crochet bra tops...so cute! yes please) and breathable comfort for dancing 🎶
the visuals are wild, the crowd is close and you'll be on your feet for hours — so your outfit needs to keep up
here's everything i've figured out so far, including the exact pieces i'm pulling from for this weekend 🌙

key outfit ideas
textured and sheer tops: layer a crochet, lace or mesh top over a simple bralette or super soft and fitted tank that has some hold for us ladies with some cuuurve 🌀
this adds visual interest under the beaming lasers without trapping too much heat (iykwim)
graphic tees and band-adjacent merch: you can never go wrong with a vintage-style graphic tee. pair it with loose denim or baggy cargos for that effortless concert look ✨
our discoball | raglan baby tee is perfect for this — light, graphic and very on-theme with the recent whole disco era return, and honestly it could not be more tame impala if it tried
shimmer and shine: incorporate some oh-so-subtle metallic or satin pieces — a little sheen catches stage lights beautifully and leans into the disco-pop vibe of currents
boho and retro elements: flowy silhouettes, retro graphics, layered jewellery and tinted sunnies. the morning sunrise | baseball tee hits this perfectly — that sunrise palette reads dreamy under concert lighting.
the three silhouette formulas
1. relaxed top + fitted bottom — oversized tee or airy button-up with fitted pants or shorts. casual-cool and still shaped
2. fitted top + relaxed bottom — tank or baby tee with looser trousers. that 'i didn't try too hard' vibe, but still styled
3. one-piece moment — a simple dress or jumpsuit with layers and accessories doing the heavy lifting. easy, comfy, and you can build the vibe around it
when in doubt, choose the silhouette you'd wear on a long day out, then elevate it with texture and detail 🌀

colour palettes that always work (especially under concert lighting)
concert lighting can wash you out or make colours look totally different — so i like palettes that stay flattering even when the lights go wild.
1. coffee tones + metallic accent — warm browns, tan, cream, and one reflective detail. coffee tones photograph beautifully and feel very 'grown but fun'.
2. black base + psychedelic pop — all-black is a go-to concert uniform, but for tame impala add one pop: a colourful scarf, lightly-tinted glasses, or a statement accessory. the sunset lake back | hoodie is perfect for this formula.
3. washed neutrals + denim — faded denim, white, soft grey, muted green. vintage festival energy without being a festival costume. our xtra loose fit straight-leg washed jeans are exactly this vibe.
4. deep jewel tones — plum, emerald, deep blue. expensive under stage lights and very 'nighttime show' appropriate.
texture is the cheat code
if you want your outfit to look styled in photos and videos, texture matters more than having a complicated outfit.
textures that match the tame impala universe: shimmer or satin (subtle shine that catches the lights), mesh layering (light, breathable, looks cool), crochet/knit (retro), leather-look or coated fabric (edgy but sleek), corduroy (warm, vintage vibe).
even a basic tee becomes a concert outfit if you add one textured layer — an open shirt, a light jacket, or a long sleeve underneath. try the moons | crop hoodie as your layer — it's got that dreamy retro energy and looks incredible in low light.
three concert outfit formulas i swear by
formula 1: the cool-without-trying set
top: relaxed tee or airy button-up (slightly oversized looks best)
bottom: straight-leg pants or relaxed cargos
shoes: comfy sneakers or sturdy boots
add-ons: tinted glasses + one statement ring or chain
this works for literally any venue. it's also perfect if you're going with friends and don't want to be adjusting your clothes all night. the a-frame | staple tee in a neutral is exactly this formula

formula 2: the psychedelic soft look
top: fitted tank or baby tee
layer: mesh long sleeve or light cardigan
bottom: denim shorts or a mini skirt with comfortable coverage
shoes: knee-high boots or loafers
add-ons: glossy lip + sparkly highlight
this hits that dreamy vibe without being too much. the discoball | raglan baby tee + our vintage straight-leg loose denim shorts is genuinely my favourite combo for this one.
formula 3: the nighttime main character fit
one-piece: simple dress or jumpsuit
layer: cropped jacket or oversized shirt
shoes: platform-style comfort (only if you can actually walk in them)
add-ons: metallic accessory + small bag you can keep close
this is for when you want to look extra polished in photos, especially if you're going to dinner before the show
men's outfit ideas that vibe
i love when men's concert outfits lean into texture and shape instead of just tee and jeans — nothing wrong with that, but you can elevate it so easily.
option a: retro clean — relaxed button-up (open over a tee) + straight-leg pants + sneakers. add a chain or wooden-beaded bracelet. the jeep renegade blue back | hoodie tied around your waist gives this instant character.
option b: dark and glossy — black tee or white ringer tee with black trim + coated/black denim + boots. add a light jacket for structure. looks incredible under stage lighting.
option c: earth tones — coffee/olive/cream top + darker pants + simple accessories. earth tones feel very on-theme for the warm, dreamy sounds of tame impala. our happy mountain | staple tee in olive is made for this

how to choose shoes (this is where people regret everything)
comfort is not optional. a tame impala concert means long lines, standing shoulder to shoulder, and a lot of walking — especially at a big city show like vancouver.
shoe rules i follow:
1. closed-toe wins in crowds. it's just safer.
2. if you can't stand in them for two hours at home, don't bring them.
3. choose grip. some venues have slick floors and you don't want to be sliding around while trying to dance.
sneakers and boots are the easiest. if you want height, pick something stable and broken-in
accessories that look amazing in concert photos
accessories are where you can go a little trippy without changing your whole wardrobe.
my favourites for this concert: tinted sunglasses (yes, even at night), silver-toned jewellery (catches light beautifully), scarves or bandanas (hair accessory or neck detail), a small shoulder bag (keep it close), one statement belt (instantly makes basics look styled)
the discoball | trucker hat is my hero accessory pick for this show — it's giving exactly the right energy.
try not to over-stack everything at once. pick one hero accessory and let the rest be supportive
hair ideas that survive dancing (and still look cute)
concert hair should be cute but functional. if your hair is in your face all night, you'll be annoyed and it'll show in every video
easy options: half-up style (best of both worlds), low bun with face-framing pieces (sleek and secure), two small front twists pinned back (soft and dreamy), natural texture + a headband or bandana (very on-theme and easy)
if it's hot or you're going to be deep in the crowd, choose something that keeps your neck clear

makeup that makes sense for psychedelic lighting
stage lights can erase flat makeup, but heavy makeup can feel uncomfortable if you're sweating. the sweet spot is 'fresh base + strategic shine'.
what works:
1. a base that won't slide. keep it light, set the centre of the face
2. one shimmer moment. inner corner, highlighted lid, or cheekbone glow
3. defined lashes or liner. your eyes will still show up in photos
4. lip comfort. choose something you don't mind reapplying
if you want to go extra, add a tiny sparkle detail near the eyes. under concert visuals it looks magical without needing a full glam routine
layering for unpredictable venues
one minute you're outside in line, the next you're inside packed tight, then later walking back out into the cold air. layering is the difference between enjoying the show and thinking about your outfit all night.
my layering strategy
base layer: breathable and comfortable
top layer: light jacket, overshirt or cardigan that you can tie around your waist or over one shoulder and can carry easily
the find your wild back | hoodie is the perfect carry layer — lightweight enough to tie around your waist but substantial enough to actually keep you warm when you need it.
don't bring anything you'll hate holding. if you know you won't want to carry it, make sure it can be tied around you securely
outfit ideas by energy level
minimal: neutral tee + straight pants + sneakers + one chain. clean, simple, always works.
styled: fitted top + textured layer + denim + boots + tinted glasses. the sweet spot for most people.
bold: statement pants (pattern or shine) + simple top + strong accessories. keep the top calm so the outfit doesn't feel chaotic
what to avoid (so you don't spend the whole night adjusting)
1. anything that constantly slips. strapless pieces can be stressful in a crowd unless you're 100% confident in the fit.
2. shoes you're 'testing'. concert night is not the time.
3. bags that swing around. go small and secure.
4. heavy layers you can't manage. if you'll end up holding it all night, it's not worth it
my personal checklist before leaving the house
phone + id + ticket + money in a secure bag
hair secured — even if it's down, pin the front back
comfort test: sit, stand, walk and do a little dance in the mirror. if anything feels annoying, it will feel 10x more annoying at the venue
photo test: one quick mirror pic with flash. if your outfit has any reflective or shiny elements, you'll see immediately how it reads on camera
essential concert tips to make the most of tame impala
get there early. the openers set the vibe — and you already know how i feel about and you'll want to scope out your spot before it fills up. for tame impala, floor position matters — being mid-crowd hits different than being at the back.
download your ticket offline. wifi and data at venues are notoriously unreliable. screenshot your ticket or download it to your wallet before you leave home.
go light on the bag. most venues have bag size restrictions now. a small crossbody or bum bag is your best friend — phone, id, card, lip balm, done.
charge your phone fully + bring a small power bank. you will want to film currents live. trust.
find your people before you lose signal. set a meet-up spot with your group at the start of the night in case you get separated in the crowd.
eat before you go. venue food is expensive and the lines are long. a proper meal beforehand means more energy for dancing and less time in a queue.
protect your ears. this sounds boring but tame impala is loud. foam earplugs actually make the sound cleaner and richer at high volumes — and your ears will thank you the next day.
let yourself get lost in it. put the phone down between songs. the light show, the crowd energy, the bass — it's worth being fully present for.
a few last styling combos that always hit
coffee-tone top + black pants + silver jewellery — warm, sleek and very concert-friendly
all-black base + one colourful accessory — effortless and perfectly on-theme for psychedelic visuals
denim + soft neutral knit — retro, comfortable and cute in both daylight and nighttime lighting
simple dress + oversized shirt — easy movement, flattering shape, and you can adjust for temperature fast
see you in the crowd. keep it comfortable, add one texture or shiny detail, and let the music do the rest. 🌀
