ugly-beautiful: the case for funky fall fashion

ugly-beautiful: the case for funky fall fashion

Fina Funk

a manifesto...

what exactly is a manifesto? according to people other than me, it is: written by individuals to define their own core values, life goals or personal code of conduct

yes, that makes sense

ever since I can remember, even as a little kid, I would gather all the funky scarves, furry vests and blingy belts from my mum's closet and try to do something more with them to my daily outfits. did I get teased at school by my friends? yes. did I care? no! haha

there is a kind of dressing that plays it safe. neutrals, basics, nothing that announces itself. and that is fine.. for some

it photographs well. it goes with everything and therefore goes with nothing and has nothing to say

then there's the other kind (ie: weirdos like me ;)

ugly-beautiful city coffee run

the burnt orange hoodie with the teal lake graphic. the maroon and rainbow combination that shouldn't work and absolutely does. the mustard gold tee worn with indigo and a green tote and a scarf in three colours because why not, it's september, the leaves are doing it too!

this is what I like to call ugly-beautiful. and it's the only fashion philosophy worth having, in my unprofessional opinion

ugly-beautiful is wearing something that makes you feel something. it's a graphic that's too big, a colour that's too loud, a combination that makes someone on the street do a small double take and then immediately want to know where you got it, or at least smile

it's fashion that has a personality, which means fashion that has opinions, which means fashion that is actually alive

Latina woman — white hoodie back graphic at viewpointthe best dressed people we know are not wearing the right things. they're wearing the true things that matter to them

  • the hoodie they've had for years with the graphic that still makes them laugh
  • the tee they bought because the mountain on the front looked exactly like the one they climbed last summer
  • the hat that doesn't match anything and matches everything because it's theirs

fall 2026 is going to be full of beautiful, safe, coordinated, forgettable outfits

don't wear those

ugly-beautiful trail shot

wear the thing that's too much. clash the colours on purpose. put the loud graphic next to the louder accessory and walk out the door like you meant every single bit of it.

because you did. because everyone deserves funky fashion. because the a-frame has no dress code and neither does the trail and neither do you
