vintage vibes & living large: thrifting your way to epic style

Fina Funk

okay, can I please talk about the absolute magic of vintage shopping?

if you've started from the beginning with us, you'd have read one of our first articles about of when we lived in the 'city' and used to obsess over vintage clothes and I first found out about the whole, (typically!) underground, vintage fashion universe.

Growing up with a dad that was meticulous with recycling all his rubbish, I loved the idea of recycling of clothing items instead of just throwing them away, of passing something that doesn't work for you anymore on, maybe even to someone who appreciates the item even more than you did - that's what's so great about vintage clothes stores, you never know what you're going to find, and sometimes you can find some real treasures.

and we're not talking about the dusty-musty, "ooh look at this antique..." kind of magic

i'm talking about the kind where you walk into a thrift store with $20 and walk out feeling like you just robbed a fashion vault 🛍️ like did farrah fawcett just drop off all her funky clothes??

here's the thing about vintage: every piece has lived a whole life before you.

that denim jacket? probably saw some of those original lallapooluza concerts. those wide-leg ripped jeans? definitely danced at a house party or eight in the 90s.

when you're going to vintage re-use-it stores, you're not just buying clothes – you're adopting stories, and honestly, that's way cooler than anything hanging in a box store mall.

the thrill of the hunt

there's something ridiculously satisfying about digging through racks and finding *that* piece that was made beautifully, looks tailored or sequined or .

put aside the kinda stale smell (no one talks about it, but it's a 'thing' at many vintage stores!) and just focus your eyes on what pleases you, and try to recognize your size.

you know the one – it grabs your eye from the rack, fits like it was custom-tailored for you and is less pricy than what you pay for your team's morning coffee run!

that's the vintage shopping high, and it's addictive in the best way.

is it a pair of light wash jeans in your perfect size? is it something that will work so great at the upcoming apres-ski/80sretro/70sfunkskate/fill-in-the-blank party!

plus, let's be real: when someone compliments your fit and you get to say "thanks, it's vintage" with that casual confidence? it just feels good 😎

and if you haven't caught the vintage vibe, that's okay

there's always your first time, when it seems like some richer person the same size as you just cleaned out their wardrobe, and you just scored some serious designer/supercool items!

living large on any budget

vintage shopping is the ultimate flex because you're creating looks that nobody else has.

you're mixing decades, breaking rules, and building a wardrobe that's 100% you.

what I like best, is that pairing a vintage item that has plenty of character and patina, with a fresh and brand new item is just the right kind of balance to make both look like you've curated your whole closet - who's to say you haven't!?

that oversized band tee with baggy jeans and chunky sneakers? vintage made it possible. that perfect leather jacket that would cost $300 new but you snagged for $35? vintage came through. the fur that looks like it swung in the 20s? pure vintage gold.

like I said, you never know what you might find.

it's not about spending big – it's about styling smart and having fun with it.

throw on that thrifted flannel over a super cute graphic tee, add some vintage distressed denim, and suddenly you're living your best life without emptying your bank account.

sustainability is sexy

can we also appreciate that vintage shopping is basically the OG sustainable fashion?

when you're giving clothes a second life, keeping stuff out of landfills, and looking incredible while doing it - it's a win-win-win situation.

the planet's happy, your wallet's happy, and your wardrobe is absolutely thriving.

tips for your next thrift adventure

  1. go in with an open mind – sometimes the best finds are things you weren't even looking for.
  2. check the men's section – even if you don't shop there usually (oversized vintage tees are *chef's kiss*).
  3. don't be afraid of pieces that need a little love – a good wash with a large heaping of borax, or a small repair can transform something from "meh" to "wow."
  4. give yourself a budget and stick to it goes without saying, but it can all add up quickly, a $5 leather belt here, a $18 dollar wooly cardi there. set a budget, and add up in your head as you go.
  5. and most importantly? have fun with it go with your friends. grab a fancy latte beforehand. break up the day with a al fresco lunch with your besties.

so grab your reusable tote, hit up your local thrift spots, and go live large. your next favourite piece is out there waiting for you.

vintage shopping isn't supposed to be stressful or perfect. it's about the adventure, the unexpected discoveries, and building a style that's uniquely yours.
