whistler style guide: how locals dress for mountain life

Fina Funk

there’s a certain kind of style that only happens when you live somewhere like Whistler.

it’s not fashion for fashion’s sake — it’s fashion that works. layers that go from a sunrise hike to a patio beer to a dance floor that smells faintly like wet fleece. okay, maybe not such a good thing but no one really cares.

it's pieces that still look good with a little mountain dust (or a lot. lol).

whether you're hitting the trail at sunrise or grabbing coffee in the village, the right pieces make every moment feel effortless. and the mountain does the rest.

this isn’t about looking put together. it’s about looking like you didn’t try… and still somehow won.

what do whistler locals embrace?

locals here don't overthink how we dress. overthinking is for people who brought the wrong shoes.

maybe we might get teased from city people for wearing only gore-tex (which we proudly do on the mountain so we can become practically bomb-proof during storm sessions) but we also have a rugged, vintage, funky vibe. It's anything but boring!

🔥 embrace a little chaos (but make it intentional)

here’s the secret: the best outfits here are a little unhinged.

mix colours that shouldn’t work. wear socks that clash. throw a vintage windbreaker over your brand new hoodie.

the goal isn’t to look polished — it's kinda more like you got dressed in the dark and somehow nailed it. the key is NOT to look too polished, too put together, but to be a little wabi-sabi in a way.

because in a place like Whistler, authenticity always beats perfection

🏔️ find your “signature weird”

every local has one thing that makes you go, “yeah, that tracks”. it helps define their personality, gives their outdoor wear a little edge.

maybe it’s neon sunglasses in every weather condition. maybe it’s a bandana that’s seen more than you have. maybe it’s that one fleece everyone recognizes from a mile away.

the point is: pick something a little unexpected and make it yours.

that’s how you go from 'day visitor' to 'someone who fits right in'

the best outfits here feel like they could handle a spontaneous detour.

you never really know if the backyard bbq will end up with everyone climbing the ridge to check out the late summer sunset, or an impromptu kitchen dance party happens once everyone gets home from a long day skiing

you should be able to:

  • take a wrong turn, end up on a trail and be comfortable
  • say yes to “just a quick hike” that becomes six hours
  • say yes to a last-minute swim

if your outfit can’t handle that, it’s not mountain-ready.

function isn’t the opposite of style here — it is the style.

the whistler wardrobe formula

the tee that does it all

a great graphic tee is the backbone of any whistler outfit. it should say something — ideally something a little weird.

wear it solo on a warm summit day, layer it under a flannel when the clouds roll in or pair it into your favourite baggy board shorts for to head to the lakes

our a-frame staple tee was made for exactly this — a nod to the peaks, built for people who refuse to stay indoors when it’s bluebird out.

layer like a local (or suffer)

whistler weather has mood swings.

sunshine, wind, light rain, existential crisis — sometimes all before lunch.

a hoodie you can tie around your waist is non-negotiable, but a zippered one? best of both worlds... and a crop hoodie? even better. it says, 'yes, i’m practical' but also 'i have range.'

locals know the best outfits are the ones that adapt faster than the forecast. if you have to go home and change, you’ve already lost.

the hat is not optional

this is not an accessory. this is infrastructure. whistler locals treat their hats like a signature.

sun, wind, helmet hair, decisions you made last night – a good trucker hat solves all of the above. around here, hats are basically personality types.

pick one that says something about you: happy camper? that's not just a vibe, it's a lifestyle. tired hiker, part-time menace — all valid.

wear it like you mean it.

there’s something about the blue westfalia that captures the whistler spirit perfectly – freedom, adventure, and a healthy disregard for staying in one place too long.

that’s the energy.

your outfit should feel like you could sleep in it, hike in it and accidentally end up in another town in it. if it can’t handle a spontaneous detour, what are we even doing?

van life westfalia aestheticthrift it, trade it, earn it

the best outfits aren’t bought — they’re collected.

a flannel from a dusty thrift store. a hat you “borrowed” and never gave back. a hoodie that’s been through three seasons and at least one questionable decision — that’s proof of life.

in mountain towns, looking slightly wrecked is a badge of honour. if your outfit has stories, you’re doing it right; if it doesn’t, give it time.

you’re not dressing for a photoshoot. you’re dressing for whatever happens after you leave the house.

confidence is the whole thing

you can have the perfect layers, the best tee, the coolest hat — but if you’re fussing with it every five seconds, it shows.

the people who look the best out here? they’re not checking themselves.

they’re already halfway up a trail, halfway into a conversation, or halfway into another beer. commit to the outfit. commit to the day.

the golden rule: look good, feel ready

the goal is simple:

look like yourself, just slightly more adventurous
feel like you could leave for something unexpected at any moment

because around here, you probably will. and if you’re dressed right, you won’t have to think twice.
